The MMI Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme (CSFP) is a structured 3-year PhD programme for medical graduates with the objective of developing the next generation of clinician scientists.
Dr Sanjay Chotirmall graduated from the MMI CSFP fellowship training programme in 2012. During this fellowship, he investigated the role of oestrogen in cystic fibrosis. This work led to high impact publications in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (AJRCCM), as well as the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Dr Chotirmall has been awarded the Royal Academy of Medicine of Ireland (RAMI) Doctor award on two occasions (2010 & 2013), the Irish Thoracic Society Award (2011), the Dublin Centre for Clinical Research (DCCR) Young Investigator Award (2011), the MMI-CSFP Medal (2011), the Royal College of Physicians William Stokes Award for research (2010) and the American Thoracic Societies International Award (2009). Following his graduation Dr Chotirmall completed his Specialist Training programme in Ireland.
In 2015, he joined the faculty at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCSoM) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. NTU is the world’s 13th best university and the world’s number one young university. The LKCSoM is a partnership between NTU and Imperial College, London. He has been appointed Assistant of Molecular Medicine and established the Translational Respiratory Research Group in September 2015. He also holds an Honorary appointment as Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College, London. In his short time at LKCSoM, he has amassed over $1 million Euros worth of research funding to study Asian phenotypes of lung disease and won the National Medical Research Council’s (NMRC) Transition Award in August 2016.
