MMI Education & Training Annual Scientific Meeting 2015

Over 110 people gathered in the Science Gallery, Dublin on 24 March 2015 for presentations from MMI Clinical & Translational Research Scholars, MMI Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme Alumni and the wider research community. Areas covered included innovative research in cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease, hepatitis C infection, lung disease, diabetes complications, perinatal disease, and central nervous system disorders. Keynote Addresses were from Professor Chris Chamberlain (UCB Pharma) and Professor Sir Gordon Duff (St Hilda's College, Oxford).

The MMI Education & Training Annual Scientific Meeting took place in the Science Gallery TCD on Tuesday 24 March 2015. Over 110 people gathered for presentations from the Clinical & Translational Research Scholars Programme (CTRSP) MMI Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme (CSFP) alumni and the wider research community. Areas covered included innovative research in cancers rheumatoid arthritis kidney disease hepatitis C infection lung disease diabetes complications perinatal disease and central nervous system disorders.

The Chairman of Molecular Medicine Ireland Thomas Lynch opened the Meeting which comprised oral research presentations by CTRSP Scholars and Keynote Addresses from Professor Chris Chamberlain (UCB Pharma) and Professor Sir Gordon Duff (St Hilda's College Oxford).

MMI Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme Alumni Dr Fergus McCarthy (St Thomas' Hospital) and Dr Sanjay Chotirmall (Imperial College London/Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine Singapore) presented their research and updated the audience on their career progression.

There were also opportunities to view research posters submitted by MMI CTRSP Scholars. Additional posters were presented by the wider community pursuing clinical & translational research.

MMI CTRSP Scholar Edel McGarry (NUI Galway) was awarded the MMI Medal for her presentation 'Identification of a Novel Ubiquitin Specific Peptidase Involved in Maintaining Genomic Stability'.

Lauren MacDonagh (TCD) was awarded the prize for best poster from a CTRSP Scholar for her presentation entitled 'Inhibition of the cancer stem cell marker ALDH1 re-sensitises cisplatin resistant NSCLC cells to cisplatin-induced apoptosis'

Two prizes were awarded to posters presenters from the wider scientific community. Best poster was awarded to Andrew Selfridge (UCD) for his poster presentation 'Suppression of hypoxia-induced HIF stabilisation by hypercapnia'. The prize for runner up poster presentation was awarded to Conor Kerley (UCD) for his presentation 'Novel clinical aspects of dietary nitrate: potential effects on human cardiorespiratory disorders'.

The Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme (CSFP) was funded under PRTLI Cycle 4 in 2008. 22 medical graduates undertook PhD studies in five academic institutions (NUI Galway RCSI TCD UCC and UCD). Further information on the MMI CSFP at https://www.crdi.ie/csfp

The MMI Clinical & Translational Research Scholars Programme (CTRSP) began in 2011 with an intake of 20 Scholars and a subsequent intake of 5 Scholars in 2012. The CTRSP is a unique cross-institutional programme which will develop graduates with knowledge and skills to pursue disease-focused research and bridge gaps between basic scientists clinical scientists and industry.
